What is Bullying

Bullying is a behavior where one person or a group repeatedly and intentionally harms, intimidates, or mistreats someone else. It can take different forms, physical, verbal, social and cyber (internet or social media).   Bullying can affect anyone, but certain groups of people may be more vulnerable to it due to various factors, and can be experienced in schools, workplaces, communities, within families and relationships. People of all ages are at risk of experiencing bullying.

How Bullying Affects Your Life

  1.     Mental Health Issues: Bullying can lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of low self-esteem or worthlessness. Constant criticism or being put down can create long-lasting negative beliefs about oneself.
  2.     Social Isolation: Victims of bullying might withdraw from social situations, avoid interacting with others, and experience feelings of loneliness or disconnection. This can affect relationships with family and friends.
  3.     Academic and Career Impact: Bullying can interfere with concentration and focus, leading to a decline in academic performance or difficulty in work environments. Fear of being targeted can also make it hard to perform at one’s best.
  4.     Physical Health Problems: The stress of bullying can manifest physically, leading to headaches, stomach issues, or even more serious conditions like sleep disorders or chronic stress.
  5.     Long-Term Emotional Damage: For some, the effects of bullying don’t go away after the bullying stops. The emotional scars can persist, leading to long-term struggles with trust, relationships, and self-image.
  6.     Behavioral Changes: Some victims may develop coping mechanisms like aggression, anger issues, or even substance abuse to deal with the pain. Alternatively, they may become overly passive and struggle to assert themselves.
  7.     Lower Quality of Life: Over time, the cumulative effects of bullying can lead to a  diminished sense of joy, lower life satisfaction, and feelings of hopelessness.

What Is Our Approach To Bullying Counseling

We offer individual psychotherapy sessions where we use a trauma-centred approach. This is done with compassion, care, and deep listening to the individuals’ experience of bullying.  We engage in psychoeducation, to better understand the impact of bullying on the nervous system and socio-emotional well being. Clients are taught coping strategies to deal with their emotions and triggers, as well as self-esteem enhancement strategies to reclaim their sense of worth and confidence.
